The Women’s March in Salt Lake City

On January 23rd, many people gathered for a march in Salt Lake City that went north on State St from N. Temple to the Capitol Rotunda.  The news estimated that 10,000 people came with about 6,000 of us in the Capitol building. In the crowd were women and men of all ages.  Many carried signs and many of us chanted “This is what democracy looks like”.

Once at the Capitol, we heard speeches from Katie Kelly (who had attended the Washington DC march) and several guest speakers:  Angela Romero, Patrice Arent, Jim Dabakis, Susan Duckworth, Marie Poulson, and a Navajo woman whose mother was killed recently.  She told us that assaults on native women are 10 times higher than assaults on non-native women.  The legislators described some of their bills for this year.

Our goals were to gather on the opening day of the 2017 Legislative Session to make the legislators more cognizant of our numbers and concerns that we want more say in bills that are passed related to women and women’s issues.  We all need to know who are our senators and representatives and to communicate with them about our concerns.  The GRC is following several bills and any member of UNA can join our committee and provide input.

A new columnist (Gehrke)  to the Salt Lake Tribune posted his comments on the march at .
